I have been building online environments since 1992, initially in the dial-up Bulletin Board Systems realm (BBS for us veterans) and then in 1995 for the Internet. Online art has come a long was since the ASCII art days and so have the tools.

For my artwork I use Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended - Full. Paint directly on 3D models and access all the power of Photoshop for 3D editing and compositing.
